My Wedding Background
I’ve been capturing weddings for over 15 years and have been doing so as my sole, full-time profession since 2009.
I personally capture the day of about 45 – 50 couples each year. Additionally, I run a wedding company that does videography and DJ service (and so much more). I’m involved in all the planning with each and every FineLine bride regardless of what combination of photography, video, DJ, or photo booth services they have with us. I know how to plan a day from start to finish and I know how everything works together.
When a couple hires me as their wedding photographer, they’re getting a value that goes beyond just the service of capturing the wedding day’s moments. I like to remind couples that weddings is what our company does each and every day. We have a full time staff dedicated to support the work I do in the field. We incorporate procedures and practices that are part of the culture of Fortune 500 companies. In other words, we take what we do very seriously and we offer what I truly believe, is an unmatched level of professional service with high quality results.
On The Wedding Day
Helping to Guide the Day – On the day of the wedding, I like to give my couples space, but I’m far from a wall flower. Yes, I want to get lots of candid photos for you (that’s the easy part), but sometimes capturing great moments also means helping to direct certain situations. Whether that means having the right people in the right place when a moment is expected to happen, moving an individual or group towards better lighting in anticipation of an exciting moment, or simply making decisions on what order things should proceed to maximize the opportunities is a role I believe is necessary and important.
Posing Couples – As for posing couples, I really try to take all the stress out of this for the bride and groom. I’ll take care of all of this, but I always make sure I adjust my approach from couple to couple. I always start out with simple, elegant poses. This is to make sure we have a base line of pretty shots of the couple, but also allows me to read them to see where we go from there. If I have a couple that’s a little nervous or shy, I’m going to continue to keep the poses simple and easy for them. If I have a couple that’s quite the opposite, then we’ll continue to do more complex or creative poses until I feel they’re happy with the amount of variety we’ve done.
Understanding ‘Good’ Light
I also stress the importance of working with ‘good light’. Some photographers merely advertise themselves as just ‘natural light photographers’. Whether light is natural or artificial is not what determines whether it is desirable or not, and just because something is natural does not mean it is necessarily good. For example, there are often situations throughout the wedding day where the natural light is not our friend and so we have to create better light.
Unfortunately, there are many professional photographers who simply don’t know how to create good light, so they avoid doing so. However, this limits so much creativity as well as the quality of many reception photos. Knowing good light means understanding direction of light, color temperature of light, intensity of light (soft vs. harsh), size of light, distance of light, and also knowing how to work with all these variables.
I love working with each and every one of my couples. To me, their role is to enjoy the day and my role is to make sure I capture their joy for years to come. My goal is to bring a modern approach to classic and traditional story telling. I want my couples to have images that are ready to be made into works of art, displayed proudly in their homes. I want their images to be timeless and never outdated. Most of all, I want them to enjoy my work and be happy with their decision in choosing me as their photographer.
